Springfield native John Legend produces film about Obamas’ first date

John Legend has furthered his reach beyond music with a new film, “Southside With You.”

The Springfield native, alongside business partner Mike Jackson, served as executive producers for the film that made its debut Jan. 17 during the Sundance Film Festival.

The Grammy- and Oscar-winner singer has had a busy 2016. In addition to the movie, he and wife, Chrissy Teigen, had their first child and Legend has raised money to renovate the former South High School.

“Southside With You” follows a young Barack Obama, then a Harvard Law student who accepts a summer job in Chicago. While there, he convinces his boss, the then Michelle Robinson (now the First Lady of the United States), to go on a date with him.

The audience gets to witness not only the beginning of their relationship, but discover how each of their unique upbringings would go on to shape their future aspirations.

Reviews for the film have been moderately positive. It was nominated for the Grand Jury Award at Sundance and received the Audience Award for Best First Narrative Feature at the Maui Film Festival. "Southside With You" will be released in theaters Aug. 26.

Legend has shared the movie poster and trailer on his Facebook page in recent months.
