Springfield native, John Legend, announced as Grammy performer

John Legend will share the stage with other artists on Sunday at the Grammy Awards as they honor Nipsey Hussle.

Legend will be joined by Kirk Franklin, DJ Khaled, Meek Mill, Roddy Ricch and YG.

The Springfield native met Hussle on the set of “Higher,” a song collaboration by Khaled featuring Hussle and Legend.

The artists recorded their vocals for the song separately, according to the Associated Press.

“It was actually very cool because we were on a high-rise parking structure in South L.A. and you could see his neighborhood from where we were shooting the video and he was just showing me where he grew up all from, like, a bird’s eye view,” Legend said to the Associated Press. “You could just tell how proud he was of where he was from, how connected he was to where he was from.”

“It was authentic,” he added. “It was very cool to see him in his element and it made it all the more tragic to know that just a couple days later he would have his life taken.”

“Higher” was nominated for Best Rap/Sung Performance and is up against “Drip too Hard” by Lil Baby and Gunna, “Panini” by Lil Nas X, “Ballin” by Mustard featuring Ricch, and “The London” by Young Thug featuring J. Cole and Travis Scott.

Legend was also nominated for Best Traditional Pop Vocal Album with his album, “A Legendary Christmas.”

The Grammy Awards will be broadcast live at 8 p.m. from the STAPLES Center in Los Angeles, California.
