Springfield crane company on Discover program

A Springfield-based company will be recognized on national television this week after delivering a massive Goliath Gantry Crane to a Brazilian shipbuilding firm.

“Innovations with Ed Begley Jr.” is expected to air at 7 a.m. Friday locally via the Discovery Channel, and will feature Konecranes, whose U.S. headquarters is located in Springfield.

In 2011, the company received an order to build a Goliath Gantry Crane for a Brazilian shipbuilding firm at the Port of Rio Grande. The crane will be used to assemble hulls for Floating Production Storage and Offloading ships, used for offshore oil production projects, according to information from Konecranes.

The crane is the largest of its kind in the world, and is so massive it can straddle a football stadium, according to information from the company. The crane was assembled elsewhere although the company’s U.S. headquarters is in Springfield. Konecranes is the world’s largest producer of Goliath gantry cranes and has delivered more than 60 of them to shipyards around the world.

The segment on Discovery Health is expected to last about six or seven minutes, and will be the last segment on the show, said Sarah Cass, creative director for the program. The show was produced by DMG Productions and will also air online at www.InnovationsTelevision.com.

Film crews traveled to North Korea, Brazil and Florida to film the show.

“Konecranes uses the latest technology combined with long industry experience to create market-leading lifting products,” Cass said. “Innovations is dedicated to exploring ground-breaking companies, devoted to growth and technology. We are excited to feature Konecranes in our upcoming episode, and have enjoyed working with them to learn more about what they do.”
