Simon Kenton Inn to expand

SPRINGFIELD — Officials unanimously approved a request to rezone 12 acres near the Simon Kenton Inn in preparation of an expansion, a move that will be a boost for tourism in the county, commissioners said Tuesday, June 29.

Owner Theresa Siejack applied for the land to be rezoned from an agricultural district to a planned development- mixed use district to add more amenities to the bed & breakfast at 4690 Urbana Road.

“The Simon Kenton Inn has great historic value and also is a beautiful area out in the country,” Siejack said.

“We work so hard to bring things to the city, but sometimes the country is beautiful, too,” she added. “Clark County definitely has that to offer.”

Siejack said the inn is one of the few places that offers space for large outdoor events. With the expansion, she hopes to be able to host up to 600 people at a single event.

The inn already does brisk business for weddings and Siejack eventually wants to host proms as well. She also wants to add five more lodging rooms to the inn’s 10 rooms; any overflow of out-of-town guests is referred to other local lodging.

Commissioner Roger Tackett said the inn is a much bigger thing for tourism in Clark County than most people realize.”

In other business, commissioners said they will support any cleanup option for the Tremont City Barrel Fill that includes excavating hazardous waste.

County Health Commissioner Charlie Patterson asked the commission Tuesday to draft a resolution stating as much at its next meeting.

The barrel fill, located at 3108 Snyder-Domer Road, has about 3.1 million gallons of waste, including 1.8 million gallons of industrial sludges and 1.5 million gallons of hazardous waste buried on the 8.5 acre site.

Patterson asked the commissioners to submit the resolution to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency within a public comment period that ends July 12.

The $60 million plan the EPA favors will include excavation of hazardous waste and placing non-hazardous solid waste in a properly constructed waste cell on site.
