“It’s been in rough shape for awhile but unfortunately that’s the kind of issues we face when we struggle for funds,” he said.
The wall was built in the 1930s as one of the Post-Depression WPA — Works Progress Administration projects — said Parks Supervisor Jeff Montgomery. The wall, which is about 4 feet tall, prevents cars and the bank from sliding down the 20 foot hill to the pond below.
“With the freezing and thawing we had last night it just worked its way loose,” Montgomery said as he surveyed the damage.
The park district will erect a snow-fence with warning signs in front of the bank along with a load of sand to prevent cars from driving too near the drop-off.
The parks district will need to meet with the city engineer to determine an approximate cost to repair the wall, he said.
