Sears, Kmart to open for Thanksgiving for first time

SPRINGFIELD — Thursday is the new Friday when it comes to after-Thanksgiving-day sales.

Springfield Kmart stores will be open from 6 to 10 a.m. Thursday, kicking off the Black Friday sales before its competitors.

Sears will open from 7 a.m. to noon Thanksgiving, with door-buster-type sales designed to take some of the burden of the all-day-shopping marathons off of busy families, said Darryl Yount, store manager of the Upper Valley Mall store. A $700-off deal on a 58-inch plasma TV is one of many of the store’s door-buster sales typically reserved for Black Friday morning.

“I think Sears wants to give shoppers a little bit of a jump on the sales,” Yount said. “As busy as everyone is they might not be able to hit all the stores they want to on Friday.”

Old Navy, in the Upper Valley Mall, will also open Thanksgiving Day from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. It will then reopen at midnight.

Other Upper Valley Mall stores opening at midnight include Toys R Us and Aeropostale, said mall manager Brenda LaBonte.

“It’s kind of confusing, but Elder Beerman will be next, opening 3 a.m. on Black Friday,” LaBonte said. “The other department stores will open at 4 a.m. The mall has asked all the other specialties stores to open at 5 a.m.”

Target, on First Street, will also begin its annual door-buster specials at 4 a.m. Friday.

A better-than-expected November has mall retailers cautiously optimistic, LaBonte said. “This weekend’s traffic was very busy, and obviously those door busters sale will bring in a lot more.”
