Schiessler wins Kohl's Cares scholarship

Justin Schiessler, 10, of Springfield, was announced by Kohl’s as a 2011 regional Kohl’s Cares® scholarship winner due to the positive impact that he has had on his community. Schiessler founded and operated the Mickey the Lion’s Corn Maze to benefit the ALS Association of Central and Southern Ohio. Justin wanted to do something to raise money to help find a cure for ALS after a friend of his parents was diagnosed with the disease. Justin’s corn maze was held every Friday and Saturday night in October. In addition, he planned a Kids Night for the younger children to experience the corn maze during daylight hours. He also arranged for local mascots to make appearances for the children.

Justin also worked with his school to establish an ALS Awareness Day. Students were able to break the rules and wear a baseball hat in honor of Lou Gehrig for a donation.

He creates flyers and makes presentations to local businesses, politicians, and residents. Because of the work that he has done, and continues to do, the Kohl’s Cares® Scholarship Program recognizes Justin, along with more than 200 deserving youth volunteers nationwide, with a $1,000 scholarship toward post-secondary education.
