Rue Farms Rustic Potato Chips closing - last day to buy chips

Today is the last day for Springfield residents to purchase Rue Farms Rustic Potato Chips.

Rue Farms announced that they were closing on March 26, according to a Facebook post on the company’s Facebook page.

“You all are the best and thank you again for all the support, love and well wishes,” the Facebook post said.

About eight years ago, Jeanne and Matt Rue were frying batches of chips in a deep fryer from their Clark County farm and selling them at local farmer’s markets and festivals.

The couple soon doubled their capacity and bought a second deep fryer and then a 40-pound fryer.

When they were selling their chips at a Yellow Springs Street Fair, they were approached by health officials and told if they wanted to continue making chips in bulk, they needed to do so in an FDA-approved facility.

This is when they were thrown into the potato chip industry.

Rue Farms has worked with Mikesell’s Potato Chip Co. in Dayton and Martin’s Potato Chips in Pennsylvania to produce their chips over the years.

In 2016, they purchased a warehouse and retail space, located at 3822 Springfield Xenia Road in Springfield.

According to Rue Farm’s most recent Facebook post, they are open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. today to sell their chips to the public.

Rue Farms Rustic Potato Chips have been sold across at least seven states in the Midwest at national chains including Kroger, Whole Foods and Fresh Thyme Farmers Market. The chips have also been sold at numerous smaller stores statewide.

According to the original Facebook post, Rue Farms’ next adventure includes “waiting on God to point us in that direction.”
