Record number to graduate from UD

DAYTON — The University of Dayton will set a record for graduates in a single year this weekend, as nearly 2,000 students participate in commencements.

About 2,900 students will have earned degrees from UD this year, including those from August and December, the university announced.

“It will be a great day for the university when we set a record for graduates in a semester and year,” said Tom Westendorf, university registrar and assistant vice president. “It’s a tribute to our faculty, staff and students who make the university a great place.”

Additionally, 4,630 students will graduate this weekend from Miami, Cedarville, Central State and Wilberforce universities, kicking off the commencement season which runs through mid-June at area schools.

UD will confer degrees on 1,460 undergraduates, 350 graduate students and 180 from the law school, according to the university.

A reported 95 percent of UD’s spring 2011 graduates surveyed said they were employed, in graduate school or participating in a service program within six months of earning their degree, the university reported.

Amy Bush, a Chaminade Julienne Catholic High School alumnus who will receive her sociology deree Sunday, will begin graduate school at the University of Kentucky in August.

“It’s somewhat bittersweet,” Bush said of graduating. “I’ve really enjoyed my four years and they flew by. I loved my department, my classes, getting to know my professors and doing my capstone. It made me want to go to graduate school,” said Bush, one of about 20 sociology students to graduate this spring.
