Police examine suspicious device at Springfield Walmart

SPRINGFIELD — A bomb squad and Hazmat crews were called to the scene of a suspicious device found Wednesday night outside of a Walmart store on Tuttle Road.

The Dayton Police Department Bomb Squad was on scene late Wednesday night after store security found the device in a shopping cart outside the store about 8:34 p.m. and reported it to police.

A Hazmat crew was later called to the scene about 10:30 p.m., according to emergency scanner traffic, but why was not immediately clear.

Springfield police taped off the area where the device was located in a shopping cart outside the store.

The device, which was wrapped in duct tape, appeared to be 1 foot long and 2 inches wide, said Sgt. Doug Pergram of Springfield Police Division.

Officials had shoppers move their vehicles from the Walmart parking lot about 10:15 p.m.

Crews from Springfield Fire Rescue Division were also on scene.
