The National Trail Parks and Recreation District will be expanding family movie nights program throughout Clark County this fall.
Last year, the district held three movie nights at Veterans Park in Springfield, which drew an estimated 6,000 people, including about 3,000 for Disney’s “Frozen.” Another 6,000 people attended the One Enchanted Evening event, which also included a showing of Disney’s “Cinderella” at dark.
Due to the success of the events last year, NTPRD will hold seven events this year — including four movie nights in Catawba, South Charleston, Enon and New Carlisle.
“We had such a great response at Veterans Park, we wanted to give the four corners of our county the opportunity to have them in their vicinity as well,” said NTPRD Director Leann Castillo.
The district is also working on scheduling an event in South Vienna for next fall.
The first family movie night will be held at 8:30 p.m. today at Veterans Park amphitheater with a presentation of “Big Hero 6.”
The following two weekends, the district will present “Enchanted” and “The Wizard of Oz” at the amphitheater before moving out into the county. After that, the program will move to different parts of Clark County over the next three weekends.
The movies are shown on a large inflatable screen with a state-of-the-art projection and sound system.
After renting the equipment last year, NTPRD raised about $5,000 to purchase its own equipment for future events. Tax dollars were not used to purchase the equipment, Castillo said.
“It saved us the cost of having to rent everything,” she said.
They must also purchase a license for each movie, which costs between $250 and $350, Castillo said.
Attendees should bring blankets or lawn chairs, she said. Food vendors may be present at some events, but attendees are also permitted to bring snacks or dinner, Castillo added.
“We hope that people come out,” she said. “We should have great weather.”
The three movies at Veterans Park Amphitheater are being sponsored by Hometown Urgent Care & Occupational Health, while the events in South Charleston and Catawba were sponsored by Madison Health. The two movies in October are being sponsored by NTPRD.
The events will be held rain or shine, Castillo said, unless a severe thunderstorm hits in the area. The district will update its plans on its Facebook page or the district’s weather line at 937-324-7645.
