According to Ethel Blue, president of the Bethel Township Community Group, her group decided to work with the neighboring churches in the heart of Park Layne — Park Layne Good Shepherd United Methodist and the Park Layne United Brethren In Christ — because more than one person was hearing that there was a need for a pantry located within the subdivision.
Blue explained that they wanted to help the people who do not have transportation to the pantry in New Carlisle and seniors who might be uncomfortable driving very far.
The Park Layne pantry is an expansion of a little one that was already in the church.
“They had a really small pantry, so we are helping it grow,” said Blue, who added that an entire area has been set aside for the pantry’s use.
A food drive on April 21 did not bring in as much food as organizers had hoped because the weather was cold and uncooperative.
According to Blue, Woody Childers from the Mel-O-Dee Restaurant stepped up to help them through their first days at the pantry.
He donated 30 pounds of ground beef; pork chops and presented the group with a $500 donation to help fill the shelves.
The pantry opening went smoothly, with senior citizens and young families graciously taking just what they needed to get by, said Blue.
People who would like to assist their neighbors by helping to fill the pantry shelves should call Blue at (937) 849-0482 or the Brethren Church at (937) 849-0611.
The Bethel Township Community Group is also planning a Community Yard Sale on May 19 in Raynor Park.
Those who want to set up a table or want to have their home address included in the Park Layne garage sale list and map need to call Blue at (937) 849-0482.
Blue also suggested that community members mark two upcoming events on their calendars:
• Party in the Park will be on Aug. 4 at Raynor Park.
• The National Night Out Against Crime will be Aug. 7 at the firehouse on Lake Avenue.
