New $14M Mercy Health emergency center opens to serve Enon, Fairborn

The new Mercy Health Dayton Springfield Emergency Center is days away from opening its doors to patients.

On Thursday, the Springfield News-Sun got a sneak peak tour of the facility and the services it will offer.

“It really has taken a village to put this together,” said Ruth Shade, Director of Emergency Services for Mercy Health - Springfield.

It took less than a year to construct the $14 million facility. It measures out to 11,000 square feet and houses 10 exam rooms, a lab space and imaging center which includes radiology, MRI and ultra sound services as well as a chest pain center and a fast-track sports medicine program for sports-related injuries.

The emergency center also offers a new resource for local EMS agencies — including access to a helipad in case more serious care is needed, although the facility does have two trauma rooms.

“Being here in the community allows (the medics) to bring us patients very quickly and get back on the road or back to their station,” Shade said.

Mercy Health - Springfield President Adam Groshans said the location of the new facility is critical. The emergency center is positioned on the Clark-Greene County line along Springfield Road.

The nearest emergency services, without this facility, are about about 15 minutes away in either direction of Mad River Twp. They include Mercy Health Springfield Regional Medical Center, Soin Medical Center in Beavercreek or Kettering Health Network’s Emergency Room on Old Troy Pike in Huber Heights.

“This freestanding emergency center really brings those emergency services to a community that hasn’t had them in the past,” Groshans said. “You’re looking at nine to 10 miles in either direction — and depending on traffic patterns that can really be impacted for the negative.”

The emergency center created about 30 new full-time jobs, and Groshans said they’re already planning to expand.

“Twelve acres is an awful lot of land for a freestanding emergency department, and that’s by design,” he said. “We really look at this as a future site for a lot more services to come.”

Some of those growth opportunities include medical center office space, inpatient acute care and a surgery center.

A ribbon cutting event with several project partners was held on Thursday at the new facility.

The community is invited to an open house event at the emergency center from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday.

The facility officially opens to serve patients beginning at 7 a.m. on Oct. 1.

It will be open 24 hours a day, every day.
