Moyno workers strike

Job action follows end of negotiations on Thursday.

SPRINGFIELD — Moyno Inc. employees went on strike Thursday after the company’s negotiations with United Auto Workers Local 902 ended.

The possibility of a strike has loomed since the old contract expired Feb. 1.

After a final negotiation meeting Thursday morning, 128 members of Local 902 walked off the job to contest a contract that would require wage cuts, pension freezes and other concessions. Moyno has 240 total employees.

Moyno manufactures progressive cavity pumps used to funnel liquids for the food, beverage, oil and gas industries.

Multiple calls to Moyno and to its parent company Robbins and Myers were unreturned.

Local 902 also represents 150 Moyno retirees.

President of Local 902 Bill Crites said the strike would continue until officials agreed to make some changes to the contract.

“We were trying to work with them, but they wouldn’t move,” Crites said. “At this point, we’re just waiting on them.”

A version of the contract made it to the voting round, but at a union meeting Feb. 6, it was rejected 112 to 5. Local 902 continued negotiations with Moyno until Feb. 10, when both sides agreed to take a break.

UAW bargaining chairman Dave Morrow was unavailable for comment, but in a previous interview he said Moyno has been profitable, and employees deserve to be compensated.

“We just want to share their growth,” Morrow said after the Feb. 6 union meeting.

Negotiations resumed Thursday morning, but Crites said that Moyno offered no changes to the contract.

“Then they just walked out of the meeting when we said we would go on strike,” he said.
