The business has outgrown its current space, General Manager Dan Conetta said. Many of the mail-order customers are located in the South and West, he said, and the move should create quicker shipping times.
Conetta, a Florida native, also wanted to move to a warmer climate.
“But we wouldn’t have done it if the shipping times didn’t make sense,” he said.
The company will create a distribution center in Rock Hill for aftermarket motorcycle, ATV and personal watercraft accessories, the South Carolina Department of Commerce said in a news release Tuesday, Aug. 25.
The relocation will create 40 jobs there in three years and represents a $3.3 million investment.
The business currently employs 22 workers in Springfield. Nonseasonal employees were offered a chance to relocate, Conetta said, and about a dozen of them agreed to move.
The relocation will begin in October, he said, and the Springfield location will continue to operate through January.
Competition Accessories was founded in 1959 in Xenia and moved to Springfield in 1993.
The two Competition Accessories businesses separated in 2001.
The retail store, which has 35 to 40 employees, likes its location and doesn’t intend to go anywhere, Operations Manager Jack Bowshier said.
“It’s a wonderful place,” he said. “We’re going to be here for a long-time.”
