Melvin named interim Champaign County sheriff

County must find replacement for position, slot on ballot.

URBANA — The Champaign County commissioners appointed Matt Melvin to serve as interim Champaign County sheriff during a special meeting Friday afternoon.

Melvin, who most recently served as chief deputy for the Champaign County Sheriff’s Office, will replace Sheriff Brent Emmons, who has resigned to take a job with a private security company based in Bellefontaine. Melvin could not be reached for comment Friday.

Emmons had served with the sheriff’s office for 20 years, but said he decided to leave public service after being offered a position with Acrux Security. He will be in charge of international security for travelers, among other duties.

Emmons had recommended Melvin as a replacement and noted Melvin has 17 years of experience serving in the sheriff’s office.

Friday was Emmons’ last day of work, and the commissioners said it was necessary to appoint a replacement quickly.

“I want to thank the sheriff for his service in the community and wish him the best of luck in the future,” Commissioner Max Coates said.

Mike Terry, chairman of the Champaign County Republican Central Committee, said Emmons faced an election this fall, although there are no Democratic candidates for the office.

Terry said the central committee has scheduled a meeting April 19 to select a replacement to finish Emmons’ term. In a separate motion, the committee will appoint someone to replace Emmons on the ballot this fall.

“Chances are it will be the same person,” Terry said. Terry also noted any qualified candidates interested in seeking the position can call him at (937) 652-2879.

Terry said the committee has had to replace other elected officials who didn’t finish their terms, but this case is unusual because Emmons also is on the fall ballot.

“This may be one of the only times we’ve had to replace someone on the ballot,” Terry said.
