Meghan Markle has an extraordinary connection to Ohio

While Meghan Markle has made the jump across the pond, her roots are deeply connected to Ohio.

The American actress married Prince Harry earlier this spring at Windsor Castle in England, but the new royal has connections to Cleveland, according to the Cleveland Plain-Dealer. Markle's family lived and worked in Cleveland for decades.

Here’s what we know about Markle’s connection to Ohio:

1. HARDWORKING FAMILY 

The Cleveland Plain-Dealer researched Markle's family history and found out that she comes from a long line of hardworking people. Her great-grandmother Netty Arnold worked as an elevator life-operator at a downtown Cleveland hotel, where she met her husband, James Arnold. Netty and James were both black, and worked together at the hotel where only white people were allowed to live and stay, according to the report.

2. HER GRANDMOTHER ALSO GREW UP IN OHIO

Markle’s grandmother, Jeanette Arnold, also grew up in Cleveland. Netty and Arnold raised several children in the Ohio city. Jeanette Arnold married twice in Cleveland. Her second husband, Alvin Ragland, was the father of Doria Ragland — Markle’s mother.

3. SO, WAS MARKLE BORN IN CLEVELAND?

No. Shortly after Doria Ragland's birth, the family moved from Cleveland to Los Angeles. Markle was born in Los Angeles in 1981, according to The Cleveland Plain-Dealer.
