Man, believed to be drunk, injured in crash

Officials believe a Springfield man who has seven convictions for operating a vehicle while intoxicated may have been inebriated yet again Thursday night when his pickup truck smashed into a tree.

Carlos Howell, 64, suffered serious injuries in the wreck that occurred in the 6000 block of Willow Dale Road, at the bottom of a treated but slightly snow-covered hill. Patrol and rescue crews were dispatched to the scene at about 8:30 p.m.

Howell is strongly suspected of having been under the influence of alcohol, said Lt. Matthew Cleaveland, commander of the Ohio Highway Patrol Post at Springfield.

Howell also is said to have admitted to authorities that he consumed a 12-pack of beer before the accident, the patrol told News Center 7 Reporter Layron Livingston.

Howell, whom Cleaveland said has seven OVI convictions, was being transported to Springfield Regional Medical Center where he would either be flown by medical helicopter or taken by ground transport to Miami Valley Hospital depending on weather conditions.

He was conscious and talking while being attended to by German Twp. Fire-EMS workers, township fire-EMS Lt. Richard Craig said.
