Police and medics were first dispatched at 5:57 p.m. to East Main Street, near Walgreens, on the report of a two-vehicle accident involving multiple injuries, including a pregnant woman who was possibly going into labor.
Four ambulances were called to the scene to transport the injured to Springfield Regional Medical Center, High Street. As the medic trucks lined up at the hospital’s emergency department to deliver the patients, a call came in for another injury accident at Burnett Road and Maplewood Avenue, just a block away from the first accident.
An engine and two medic trucks responded, transporting the injured from the second accident to Springfield Regional as well.
Traffic was reduced to one lane on both Main Street and Burnett Road for more than an hour while the accident scene was cleared.
