Longtime business owner dies

SPRINGFIELD — Morris H. Netts, the fourth generation owner and operator of Netts Floral Co., died Monday in his home.

He was 82.

His daughter, Julie Quinones, has owned the shop at 1017 Pine St. since 1991, when Netts retired.

“When he retired, he deserved to be retired,” Quinones said. “He worked very, very hard.”

Netts always loved flowers, Quinones said, and he let nothing get in the way of his passion. He grew his own flowers from seeds and clippings in the days when they couldn’t be shipped, and he heated his greenhouses by coal.

Quinones said Netts, who was a lifetime resident of Springfield, was kind to the other floral businesses in the area. While they remained in friendly competition, they also called each other if they needed anything, and Quinones said Netts never hesitated to help.

Netts was born in 1929 to Walter Stewart and Dorothy Netts. He is survived by his wife, Joann; daughter and son-in-law Julie and Tony Quinones; son Terry Netts; and six grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday in the Richards, Raff & Dunbar Memorial Home. Clark Lodge will hold Masonic services at 7:45 p.m. Thursday. The funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday in the memorial home with Rev. Orbie Estep officiating. Burial will be in Ferncliff Cemetery.
