Shields, 64, was fired from Springfield Prep and Fitness in 2011, after she pulled a chair out from under a disruptive student, kicked his binder, cursed and yelled at the student and left her class unattended, according to the Ohio Department of Education.
“Whenever there’s an issue with kids, we always err on the side of the child, and we take very seriously the incident,” said Myrrha Satow, CEO of Edvantages, which runs Springfield Preparatory and Fitness.
Shields could not be reached for comment.
Butcher, a teacher at Northwestern Middle School, was arrested Sunday on charges of theft and is accused of stealing $264 of merchandise from Kohl’s in Springfield, according to court documents. Superintendent Tony Orr said he notified her Monday that she was suspended without pay until the court case ended, and he has notified the ODE as required by law.
“As a superintendent I certainly adhere to the concepts of our citizenry in which someone’s innocent until proven guilty, and we look forward to this matter being resolved,” Orr said.
An attorney for Butcher did not return a call for comment.
