Local man makes ‘Price is Right’

Mike Johnson, 61, of Springfield will be a featured contestant Wednesday.

SPRINGFIELD — Either the government doesn’t know how to have any fun or Drew Carey doesn’t want to answer to the IRS.

When Springfield resident Mike Johnson appears on “The Price is Right” Wednesday, March 3, his name tag will read Michael.

That’s what’s on his Social Security card. So that’s what goes on the name tag.

“Before you even go in the studio,” Johnson said, “they want to see your Social Security number.”

It gets worse.

“They’ll send me a 1099 next January,” he said.

On second thought, that’s a good thing, right? It means Johnson at least won a little something, right?

You’ll just have to tune in to Channel 7 at 11 a.m.

We’ll say this much — he’s the first one up on stage and he tries his hand at the game known as Punch a Bunch.

Johnson, a 61-year-old Vietnam veteran who retired in 2005 from Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, is the latest Springfielder to appear on a game show.

In recent months, locals have thrown down on “Wheel of Fortune” and “Let’s Make a Deal.”

With his wife newly retired, “We decided to do a little Bucket List trip,” he said.

By way of Nashville, Texas and Phoenix, the trip eventually wound its way to Los Angeles — and to the longest-running game show in TV history.

So what’s it like to be called to “come on down”?

“My heart just stopped,” Johnson said.
