Levy backers try to win converts

MOOREFIELD TWP. — Garry Waugh already knows he will vote in favor of Northeastern Local Schools’ combined bond issue and income tax Nov. 3.

But he’s hoping to convince his neighbors to do so, too — and hopes he may have secured one new ‘yes’ vote by inviting neighbors to join him for the district’s information session at Northridge Elementary/Middle School on Thursday, Sept. 17.

About 20 to 30 residents attended one of two sessions this week, at South Vienna Elementary/Middle School on Tuesday or at Northridge on Thursday.

“We’re hoping that people get our message and get our information and they’ll make an informed decision,” said Superintendent Rick Broderick.

Northeastern will ask voters in November to approve a combined 7.572-mill property tax for new buildings and 0.25 percent income tax for operating expenses.

If approved, the property tax would cost approximately $227 a year for the owner of a $100,000 home. The income tax would cost $62.50 annually per $25,000 of income.

If the district secures voter approval for the local share in the next year, the Ohio Schools Facilities Commission would pay 41 percent — $48 million — of a project to build two campuses with three buildings on each.

Several levy supporters spoke on behalf of the district Thursday, including teacher Becky Mingus, Realtor Lori Fulk and parent Angie Kettler.

Retiree and Building Advisory Committee member Dick Grouber recounted stories of his thrifty mother and held up a T-shirt his daughter had bought him with the motto “Never pay full price.”

“The state of Ohio is willing to pay us 41 percent,” he said, alluding to the district’s potential partnership with the OSFC.
