Kids compete on toy tractors at Champaign County Fair

Pulling toy tractors can be tough, especially when the weight increases after every pedal.

Kids found that out at the Champaign County Fair on Thursday as they attempted to make a full pull and win prizes at the Kiddie Tractor Pull.

Lane Kipker, a second grade student at Indian Lake, said pedaling the toy tractor can be a challenge.

“The first time when you start is when you get the boost and then you go far,” he said. “But then you get the weight about halfway and that’s when you start to slow down.”

Weights are attached to the back of the toy tractors and as the kids pedal, the weights move up closer to the toy. This makes the tractor heavier and tougher to pedal. Before long, the toy tractor becomes too heavy and the kids must stop. The kid that can pull the tractor the farthest wins their class.

The classes are based on the weight of the kid.

Kynze Henry, a kindergartner at Graham, won class two. She said she had fun pulling the toy tractor, but one part was the most fun.

“When you win,” Kynze said.

Her father, Craig Henry, said his daughter was the one who wanted to come to the event.

“She said she wanted to do it so we came up here to see how she would do and she did good,” he said.

He said his family has enjoyed the county fair.

“We bring livestock so we are here all week showing and running around like crazy,” he said. “It’s all for the kids.”
