Inmate pleads not guilty on escape charge

SPRINGFIELD — A Clark County Jail inmate who reportedly escaped from custody and later turned himself in pleaded not guilty to related charges Thursday morning, June 25.

Skyler A. Wells, 20, is charged with escape. Clark County Municipal Judge Eugene Nevius set bond at $2,500.

Wells allegedly jumped over a fence Wednesday afternoon while working with other inmates at the Clark County Solid Waste Management District, 1602 W. Main St.

Wells called the sheriff’s office hours later to turn himself in.

At the time of the alleged escape, he was working with Providing Responsibilities for Inmates through Duties for the Environment program. PRIDE is a program for non-violent offenders and, although Wells had been convicted of domestic violence, extenuating circumstances of his case made him eligible, said Chief Deputy David Rapp, Clark County Sheriff’s Office.

“There was no concern of behavioral problems, no eminent danger to the public,” he said.

Wells’ arrest on the domestic violence charge came after he allegedly shoved a man he knew on the 2000 block of Elmsford Street in May, according to a sheriff’s report.
