If speakers and PowerPoints don’t set your interest on fire, an upcoming event may.

Ignite: Springfield will light a fuse on a fresh, brisk presentation format when it debuts at 7 p.m. Monday, Feb. 25 at Clark State’s Brinkman Educational Center, 100 S. Limestone St.

The event is presented by Champion City Entrepreneurs and takes the place of the Entrepreneurs’ monthly meeting.

Ignite events have cropped up all over the country and internationally, as the format has resonated with attendees. Presenters are given five minutes and 20 slides to work with, automatically advancing slides every 15 seconds, to try to make presentations informative, fun and fast.

Rob Alexander, an Entrepreneurs member, said the format is similar to PechaKucha presentations, which have been staged off and on locally for years.

The initial Ignite: Springfield event will feature 10 or more local entrepreneurs, business consultants and community leaders.

“We wanted to tailor this to the entrepreneurial community and business community and thought the concept sounded interesting,” Alexander said. “It will be to enlighten and inspire but very quickly and in an entertaining way.”

Everyone is invited to attend, particularly those interested becoming entrepreneurs.

“It’s a good slate of speakers, designed as a spark to lead to momentum and energy. You don’t have to be a business,” said Alexander.

He pointed to a local success story coming out of interest in Champion City Entrepreneur meetings being Dan and Lisa Freeman. They opened the European-style bakery Le Torte Dolci in 2018 and then Salato Deli earlier this year on N. Fountain Ave.

Alexander said this Ignite event could lead to others depending on attendance and its reception and hopes people will give it a chance as there should be plenty of variety. As in don’t expect all straightforward styles as surprises can occur.

“Of these talks, a lot are about business, but some can be interesting and quirky and even very motivational,” he said.
