The Pike County Coroner’s Office has identified the remains found by mushroom hunters earlier this week as a male Pike County resident.
The remains were identified as Shane Walls, 36, according to our news partners at 10TV.
The sheriff’s office told 10TV Walls was reported missing on February 19. He was last seen on Dec. 9, 2018.
A homicide investigation has been started after mushroom hunters found decomposed remains Monday afternoon a few yards off a roadway in Pike County, Sheriff Charles Reader said in a statement released Monday night.
Sheriff’s dispatch received a call from the hunters just before 3 p.m.
Deputies found a large bag just off Buchanan and Trego roads that contained decomposed remains. The county coroner, dispatched to the scene, confirmed the remains to be human.
Ohio BCI&I was called in to collect and process evidence at the scene. The sheriff’s office is handling the investigation.
The remains will be taken to the Montgomery County Coroner’s Office for autopsy.
The identity of the remains, including the gender, is pending positive identification.
