Holiday in the City opens search for tree

SPRINGFIELD — If it’s coniferous, they’ll consider it.

The search is on for the tree that will serve as the focal point of the annual Holiday in the City event.

Last year, Center City Association received 13 nominations for the community Christmas tree, settling on a 25-foot-tall blue spruce.

This year, Center City would prefer a tree that’s at least 30 feet tall.

“It must be nice and round and full,” said Maureen Fagans, executive director of Center City.

All varieties — basically, it just has to look like the kind of Christmas tree you’re picturing in your head — will be considered.

“We will consider any kind of evergreen tree,” Fagans said.

Most of the trees submitted for consideration have simply outgrown their locations, Fagans said, but must be accessible to crews to cut down.

Those interested in nominating a tree should submit their name, address, phone number and a photo of the tree by Oct. 15 to The Center City Association, P.O. box 1291, Springfield, OH 45501, or via email at liveworkplay@center-city.org.

Entering its 11th year, Holiday in the City is scheduled for Nov. 27 in downtown Springfield.

Center City played with the possibility of letting people vote for their favorite tree online, but quickly encountered a conifer conundrum.

“What happens if everyone wants the Charlie Brown tree?” Fagans said. “That’s where that discussion ended.”
