The money stems from the federal enforcement action against Volkswagen a few years ago. That case involved bypasses of diesel emissions technologies by the company. The settlement in that case allotted money to the states to be used for reducing air pollution.
The Ohio EPA estimates that statewide, the grants announced this week will reduce more than 70 tons of air pollutants a year.
Recipients from this round of grants include school districts, government agencies and businesses.
Here are the area grants:
- Butler County Engineers, Butler County, $75,568 for 25 percent of the cost to replace three model year 1998 Class B diesel-powered trucks with three model year 2019 Class B diesel-powered trucks;
- Centerville City Schools, $206,000 for 20 percent of the cost to replace 10 model year 2005-07 diesel-powered school buses with 10 model year 2021 new clean diesel-powered buses
- Greater Dayton Regional Transit Authority, $960,000 for 24 percent of the cost to replace eight model year 2009 diesel-powered transit buses with eight model year 2020 new clean diesel-powered buses;
- Heidelberg Distributing Co., Butler and Hamilton counties, $121,522 including $46,439 for 20 percent of the cost to replace three model year 1999 diesel-powered trucks with three model year 2020 new clean diesel-powered trucks, and $75,083 for 20 percent of the cost to replace four model year 1994-1997 Class 8 diesel-powered trucks with four model year 2020 Class 8 diesel-powered trucks;
- Springboro Community City School District, Montgomery and Warren counties, $153,669 for 40 percent of the cost to replace four model year 2000-01 diesel-powered school buses with four model year 2019 new clean diesel-powered buses.
