Graham moves ahead with construction project

ST. PARIS — Graham High School students will notice a few improvements immediately when school begins in September, officials said.

While a construction project to renovate the district’s high school continues, a new cafeteria and kitchen should be completed by the time school starts on Sept. 10, said Ryan Jenkins, district treasurer.

Staffco, based in Fairborn, is serving as the general contractor.

The cafeteria renovation is just one phase of a $20.5 million renovation of the high school that will add additional space for classrooms and labs, as well as an updated gymnasium. With funding from the Ohio School Facilities Commission, Jenkins said the project will add about 36,000 square feet of space, and essentially renovate the entire high school.

The additional space in the cafeteria will be a big bonus for students, said Nick Mescher, director of business for the district.

“Students won’t have to be standing up at times to eat,” Mescher said.

Previously he said, the small space available made it difficult to provide enough room for everyone. The renovations mean the space available in the cafeteria will almost double.

Students will also likely notice that the exterior walls to language and science laboratories should be completed by the time school begins.

Mescher said the school’s band room will also be renovated and carpeted over the course of the year.

He said the project will likely be completed in November, 2010.
