Complete coverage
The Springfield News-Sun provides in-depth coverage on the upcoming Nov. 3 election.
Four candidates who filed petitions for placement on the November ballot were rejected this week by the Clark County Board of Elections Office.
The candidates who were not certified were Donnelsville Mayor Bob Cornwell, Donnelsville Councilwoman Marie Kettlehake, Enon Clerk-Treasurer Diana S. McCubbin and O. Danny Mapp, who was seeking to become a member of the Springfield City Board of Education.
Kettlehake said she was shocked to learn her petition was not certified.
“I know they went over the entire thing with me over at the board of elections, so I don’t know why anything would have been left blank. That’s just kind of strange,” Kettlehake said, adding that she plans to call the board of elections to get more information.
Kettlehake and Cornwell were the only candidates who filed petitions for those seats. Board members can appoint Kettlehake or anyone else seeking the council seat to the position, she said.
Cornwell could not be reached for comment.
The candidates who were not certified cannot run as write-ins, according to Matthew Tlachac, board of elections director. Only candidates who withdraw their petition prior to the certification vote by the elections board can run as write-ins, he added.
The candidates were rejected because of various errors on their petitions. Candidates did not indicate the circulator count on a portion of their petition, had fewer than the required valid signatures on their petition, did not provide a signature on a portion of their petition or left the circulator statement blank on their petition.
Eighty-four candidates were certified to appear on the November ballot.
There are four people running for three open seats on the Springfield Board of Education: Veola E. Moore, Jamie Callan, Edward Leventhal and Chris Williams.
Springfield Twp. Fire Chief John E. Roeder will challenge incumbent Tim Foley for Springfield Twp. trustee.
Five are vying for three seats on the Northeastern Local Schools Board of Education: Joel Augustus, Ronnie E. Lemen, Jill Parker, Kent Sherry and Steve Schwitzgable.
Five are seeking two seats on the Northwestern Local Schools Board of Education: Andy Gundolf, Libbee Hasting, Sri Melethil, Paul L. Snyder and Russell Steele.
Five are also seeking two seats on the Tecumseh Local Schools Board of Education: Kevin K. E. Becker, Gary P. Cochran, Brett Collins, Peter Scarff and Corinne M. Scott.
