Fire destroys home of Cincinnati Bengals player; cause won’t be known for days

MASON — What caused the fire that destroyed the million-dollar home of Cincinnati Bengals player Antwan Odom in the exclusive Heritage Club community may not be known for days.

It took more than 10 hours Tuesday before investigators felt comfortable to enter the large, two-story structure, which was described as a “total loss” by Mason Deputy Fire Chief Craig Bryant.

Neighbors said flames were shooting 50 feet in the air when fire crews arrived at 4562 Raynor Court around 2:40 a.m. Firefighters fought the fire for hours. The roof and living room floors collapsed during the blaze.

Odom, a defensive end for the Bengals, was in Alabama with his family, Bryant said. No one was in the home when the fire started. Odom was expected to arrive at his Mason home Tuesday night.

“Antwan and his family are very appreciative of all the well wishes,” Odom’s publicist said in a release. “He and his family were safe in their Alabama home at the time of the incident. At this time, he asks that everyone respect his privacy while he and his family put the pieces back together.”

Bryant said they still don’t know where the fire started in the home valued at $1.1 million. The Mason Fire Department and officials from the Ohio State Fire Marshal’s office are continuing to investigate the blaze.

Around 9 a.m., crews began removing water from the home’s basement to make it safer for firefighters, who continued putting out fires in isolated spots throughout the home.

Bryant said it was “still very dangerous with areas that aren’t supported that could easily collapse.”

Parts of the floor were completely burned.

“It was a very serious fire,” Bryant said. “The fire was very well-developed before crews had gotten there, and there was no delay in our response.”

No other homes were affected by the fire and no one was injured.

The house is fully insured by Traveler’s Insurance Company, said William Merklinger, owner of Merklinger Insurance Agency.

Five fire departments responded to the blaze, which include Mason, Deerfield Twp., Lebanon, Liberty Twp. and Loveland-Symmes.

The Heritage Club community, a private golf course community, is located off Mason Road. The neighborhood originally was a Homearama site. According to the Warren County Auditor’s Office, the 5,970-square-foot home was built in 2000.
