Fire captain injured in crash

Patrick Casey was listed in critical condition Thursday.

BETHEL TWP — A captain with the Springfield Fire Rescue Division was seriously injured Thursday afternoon in a motorcycle crash, the division’s chief confirmed.

Patrick Casey, 56, was flown to Miami Valley Hospital in Dayton after the motorcycle he was on crashed into the back of a light-duty pickup truck in the 5100 block of New Carlisle Pike.

Casey was in serious condition Friday morning.

The truck, driven by Ryan Mullins of Springfield, had slowed for a postal service vehicle that was in front of him. Mullins was driving home from work, he said. It was then he saw the motorcyle in his side mirror as it slid into the left rear of his truck.

Mullins said Casey was not wearing a helmet.

Casey should expect to receive a citation for failure to maintain assured clear distance, Ohio Highway Patrol Trooper William Ward said. No charges were expected against Mullins.
