Henry, an adult nile hippopotamus and father to Fiona, is fighting an infection.
The Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden said the infection was discovered from blood tests. His caretakers are trying to combat his illness with antibiotics, but they said it’s no easy task to give medicine to a 3,500-pound hippo with thick skin, our media partner WCPO-TV in Cincinnati reported.
He spent today outside with Fiona and Bibi, Fiona’s mother.
Veterinarians will do a followup exam in a few weeks to see whether the treatment has been effective.
Henry, 36, came to the Cincinnati Zoo from Dickerson Park Zoo in Springfield, Missouri, WCPO reported.
