When it came down to the final question for the title of 2019 Clark County Fair Queen, Teryn Ferrell couldn’t have picked a more appropriate word.

The question: What fifth word beginning with “f” would the candidates add to the fair’s tagline of “farm, family, fair and fun.” Ferrell immediately answered “forever.”

The 2019 Global Impact STEM Academy graduate told the crowd in the Champions Center late Saturday morning that “forever” stood for the memories the fair creates that will last people’s entire lives, like it has for her through 4-H and other activities.

Ferrell will now forever be a part of fair history after being crowned the fair queen. Runner-up was Victoria Johnson, a Northeastern High School student.

Ferrell said it wasn’t until the spring she considered a run at Fair Queen. Wanting to stay involved in the fair after the passing of her horse led her to branch out.

Passionate about public speaking and having given Global Impact’s commencement speech recently, the chance to support the fair in that capacity was too much to pass up.

“It’s a little surreal,” Ferrell said. “I never envisioned myself as queen but here I am.”

Her goal is to try to create more participation in the fair, and she plans to do weekend workshops at local schools and promote activities including FFA, 4-H and the Girl Scouts, which she’s participated in.

Ferrell will study animal science with a minor in chemistry at Berry College this fall. While still at Global Impact, she earned an associates of science degree at Clark State Community College.

She earned a $650 scholarship along with the title as well as a community service scholarship worth $200 for her work with a local food bank, humane society and 4-H.

Johnson, who was the 2018 Pork Queen, got a $350 scholarship for being runner-up. Her college plans include attending Ohio State to study veterinary medicine.

Fair queen contest coordinator Debbie Corbitt took over as master of ceremonies. She said only having two candidates is unusual. There were at least two other girls who were interested in competing but had other honors and activities that prevented their participation.

The ceremony also saw the outgoing of 2018 fair queen Emma Hardacre, who placed in the top five at the 2019 Ohio Fair Queen competition.

One of her legacies was helping create a room at the Clark County Fairgrounds for new moms to breastfeed their children, inspired by a similar place at a fairground she’d traveled to representing Clark County.
