Eagle Tool owner, philanthropist dies

Charles A. Brougher served on numerous local civic organizations.

SPRINGFIELD — Charles A. Brougher, 77, of Springfield, retired chairman of the board and CEO of Eagle Tool and Machine Co. Inc. and noted community activist, died Wednesday following a lengthy illness.

His commitment to the community was apparent in the area boards on which he served as chairman, president and as a board member including the then Springfield-Clark County Chamber of Commerce, Community Hospital, United Way Campaign, Springfield Country Club, Springfield Rotary Club, Springfield Foundation, Wittenberg University and others, according to Springfield New-Sun records.

Mr. Brougher was presented in February 2010 with the Richard L. Kuss Lifetime Community Achievement Award and was inducted into the Springfield/Clark County Junior Achievement Hall of Fame as the eighth living honoree in 1997, the News-Sun reported.

“He truly enjoyed serving his community because it gave him the opportunity to think and learn about things outside of his career,” his son Bill Brougher shared as spokesperson for the family.

He graduated in 1951 from Springfield High School, then from Wittenberg University in 1955. Mr. Brougher also served in Korea with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

“Charlie Brougher was one of the first people I met when moved to Springfield 45 years ago. We were special friends from the beginning. I admired Charlie for his love for his community. He was a special person and a special friend,” said friend Fred Wall, former CEO of Robbins and Myers.

He is survived by his wife, Susie Brougher; son; Bill Brougher of Springfield; and daughters Beth Brougher of London, England, Katy Collier of Cincinnati and Nancy Benincasa of Cleveland.

“He lived a full life and I was fortunate enough to have spent 55 years by his side,” his wife said.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Littleton & Rue Funeral Home.

A memorial service will begin at 11 a.m. Sept. 1 at High Street United Methodist Church, 230 E. High St.
