Doors of Encouragement to open doors for those battling cancer

BELLEFONTAINE — There are many stories behind the 53 doors lining the downtown streets of Bellefontaine. But one in particular brings Melody Couchman to tears.

“It’s in memory of my godfather,” she said as she stood next to a large door featuring bib overalls and brass button details. Mike Beelman lost his battle with colon cancer last year.

“He had surgery in such a way it was hard to wear regular clothes and so he always wore bib overalls. That’s how you always saw Mike,” she said.

It’s his life and Couchman’s own battle with cancer that inspired her to raise awareness of cancer in Logan County and the financial need many in that battle face. She’s done that through a Doors of Encouragement campaign.

She hoped to collect 20 donated doors and have them decorated by volunteers. The doors would be auctioned off to raise money for the Logan County Cancer Society to assist local residents fighting cancer. She more than doubled that goal.

“Definitely impressed,” she said of the response. “In ways I’m overwhelmed, but maybe not so much because people are willing to help. They just needed an opportunity.”

“It’s been unbelievable the response we’ve gotten from the community and just the people driving by,” said Nancy Harmon, the community health nurse with Mary Rutan Hospital, which is helping with the administrative side of the event.

The door designs commemorate Logan County and area schools and offer positive messages to those fighting cancer. The doors can be used as decorations or partitions. Money raised will be used for gas card vouchers and medication help for those in need, Harmon said.

The auction will be held Thursday at 6 p.m. in front of the Bellefontaine Courthouse. All forms of payment will be accepted. For more information, visit the Doors of Encouragement Facebook page.
