Crash into Champaign County Library causes nearly $100K in damage

A crash into the Champaign County Library on Wednesday night caused a damage estimate of nearly $100,000, according to a library official.

A full-size pickup truck smashed into the building at 1060 Scioto St. in Urbana around 5:35 p.m.

The pickup truck was partially in the library and its driver was alert and talking, according to officials on scene.

The intial damage estimate is close to $100,000, but the adjuster has not been in to check yet, said Library Director Ty Henderson.

Henderson said the pickup truck took out two large windows and the support between them, a copier and tables.

“The meeting room is where he came in, which is where we’re running our curbside,” he said. “Thankfully, no one was injured because this could have been much worse.”

The library remains closed but is providing curbside pickup of previously requested materials at the main library in Urbana and the North Lewisburg branch.

Henderson said the crash should not affect their plans they are putting in place to reopen.

The cause of the crash or if the driver was cited is not known at this time.

The Springfield News-Sun has reached out to the Urbana Police Divison for more information on the crash.
