Coronavirus: Springfield to receive over $1M in federal funds for homeless, housing needs

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) has awarded over $137 million to Ohio as part of allocations from a massive coronavirus stimulus bill that was signed last week.

The goal of the HUD funding is to help residents who are experiencing homelessness or other housing and community needs.

That money will be allocated across the state through several programs. That includes community development block grants and emergency shelter grants as well as $910,129 going for support for the Housing Assistance for Persons with AIDS, according to a news release from the office of U.S. Senator Sherrod Brown, D-Ohio.

Springfield is slated to receive over $1.1 million in community development block grants and close to $600,000 in emergency shelter grants, according to the news release.

“This funding is a good first step for Ohioans already hurting from the affordable housing crisis,” Brown said in the news release. “But we need to do more and move quicker to get resources to the people who need help while we fight the coronavirus pandemic.”
