Coronavirus: Clark, Champaign county libraries to close

Libraries in Clark and Champaign counties will close as a precaution to slow the spread of COVID-19, or coronavirus.

All Clark County Public Library locations will close at 8 p.m. on Tuesday and remain closed until at least Monday, April 6, said library director Bill Martino.

“We regret having to do this but I feel that it is in the best interest of the community that we do our part to minimize the spread of the Coronavirus. I would rather err on the side of caution than to potentially foster the continued spread of the virus,” he said.

Loan periods will be extended and book returns will be locked, Martino said.

During the closure, the public can access digital library resources with their library card by visiting the library’s website.

The New Carlisle Public Library will close at 6 p.m. tonight and remain closed until at least Monday, March 30, said library director Beth Freeman.

“While we recognize that the library is an essential service for many, we also acknowledge the unprecedented position we find ourselves in,” she said.

Some staff will be working remotely and may be available to answer voicemail and email questions, Freeman said.

During the closure, the public is encouraged to take advantage of the many online resources on the library’s website.

The Champaign County Library will close its Urbana and North Lewisburg locations starting Tuesday and remain closed until at least Monday, April 6, said library director Ty Henderson.

“Under the guidance of the governor’s office and the Champaign County Health District, this determination was made in the best interest of public safety in order to promote social distancing and to not overwhelm the library’s ability to disinfect returned items,” he said.

The library drive-thru window will be open from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday as conditions allow, Henderson said.

To reserve or renew your items, call the library at 937-653-3811 or visit the website, which is also where the public can access online resources.

“The decision to close is incredibly difficult because the library strives to always be available to everyone. With schools closing, we understand that students need resources, including internet access, so while the library is closed, WiFi access will be available in the parking lot to accommodate those school homework requirements,” Henderson said.
