Police Chief Don Roberts has found a new job, he said, and his last day will be June 9. He’s working to hire three new officers, he said, to replace the three who are also moving to other jobs. The department has 8 officers, he said.
He did not have the time to devote to the police department that was necessary, Roberts said, and he has no negative feelings toward the village.
James Clippinger has been appointed as the new mayor.
Neighbors were sad to hear of the resignations.
“It’s a shame that the mayor has resigned,” Tremont City resident Andrea Parrott said. “She was a good mayor. And it’s a shame that our chief of police has resigned because he was excellent at his job.”
Parrott, who has lived in Tremont City since 1975, hopes the new police chief will care about the village like Roberts did.
“He cared about the village,” she said. “We’ll all miss him.”
The new officers will have to undergo training once they’re hired, Roberts said. Clark County Sheriff’s deputies and German Township Police Officers may have to respond to more calls in the village during that period, he said.
The sheriff’s office is prepared, Clark County Sheriff Gene Kelly said.
“The Clark County Sheriff’s Office is always here and will always be here, and we’ll always respond,” Kelly said.
A fresh start may be the best thing for the village, Parrott said.
“I want the best for the village,” she said. “It’s all I’ve ever wanted.”
