Clark County man smashes into his garage, through neighbor’s fence

A 70-year-old Clark County man who intended to back his four-door sedan into his garage on Lincoln Road in Bethel Twp. ended up smashing the car against the structure and severely damaging it.

He said he panicked, hit the accelerator and traveled through the fence of the yard across the street and nearly hit the house there.

A Bethel Twp. fire crew was dispatched to the 1500 block of Lincoln Road, near Crystal Lake, just after 7 p.m., and they concluded the man hit the house and garage several times with the car.

The man told us he wasn’t injured, but he fell a few minutes later after firefighters had to help him into his single-story home.

A Clark County sheriff’s deputy said he’ll cite the fella for failure to control a motor vehicle.

He won’t be able to stay in his home tonight because of the large amount of structural damage he caused when he hit the garage and the corner of his residence. Power lines also were knocked down in the accident, which left his abode in the dark.

A housing inspector from Springfield was dispatched and confirmed that sure enough, the damage to the house is such that the man can’t stay there tonight. He told us he’ll be bunking with his girlfriend, who lives down the street.
