City taxes can be filed online now

SPRINGFIELD — The nearly 29,000 procrastinators in the city of Springfield will have an extra weekend to file their municipal income taxes this year and can do it online for the first time in several years.

The city has about 31,000 individual filers and 2,800 business accounts, but so far only about 4,800 of them have filed their returns, said Nancy Belcher, taxation and revenue collections administrator.

“Everybody waits,” she said.

And this year they will have until April 18 to file because Washington D.C. will observe Emancipation Day on April 15, affecting IRS offices.

All city residents must file a municipal return, including those who don’t work in Springfield. Retired residents who are older than 65 and have filed two consecutive returns with no taxable income may fill out a form to no longer file municipal taxes.

Residents will be able to file their individual city returns online for the first time in several years through its website, www.ci.springfield.oh.us.

“It’s a great convenience for taxpayers to file online,” Belcher said.

A similar service was offered previously, but it wasn’t very user friendly and was taken down, Finance Director Mark Beckdahl said. So far, more than 280 residents have used it this year.

The free online income tax preparation tool is available for those with W-2 income and won’t receive a refund. Filers who have income that requires schedules, such as from rental properties or self-employment, can’t file online.

Residents can use the website to make payments, including for estimated quarterly payments. Filers who owe the city, such as those who work out of town or don’t have their taxes withheld from their paychecks, can face a penalty if they don’t make estimated payments, Belcher said.

Businesses also can use the site to manage their withholdings, but not to file their net profit tax returns. They can use the state’s system to file electronically though, Belcher said, and it will go to the city as well.

For questions about online filing, call (937) 324-7357.

The electronic filings save the city workers time as well, Belcher said, because they don’t have to type the information into their software system.

But city workers will still fill out returns for residents at City Hall from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday at no cost.
