CIC OKs Web site redesign

Contractor will be hired to change GoChampaign Web site to attract more community visitors.

URBANA — The county’s GoChampaign Web site is close to being redesigned in hopes it will attract more users.

The Champaign County Community Improvement Corp. voted this week to hire a contractor to redesign the Web site. The site includes a calendar of events, community news and chat rooms for residents to comment about the community.

Board members approved a contract to work with Oxiem LLC, a marketing company that will develop and maintain the site in the future. Board members are hoping to make the site more user-friendly and to provide a site that can be used to access links to the county’s villages and community organizations.

The 36-month contract with Oxiem would include a monthly payment from the CIC of $135, which will cover the costs to develop and maintain the Web site. The contract will be reviewed by an attorney before final approval.

About 1,800 visitors viewed the Web site this past month.

According to minutes from the CIC’s meeting, board members also reappointed Mary Lee Gecowets and Than Johnson to the board. The terms of both members were scheduled to expire at the end of this year.

Although the board received a request by Everpower to support a proposed wind turbine project in the county, the CIC decided not to respond to the request.

Jim Smith, executive director of the CIC, said board members felt it wouldn’t be appropriate to support or reject the request.
