Check out the library for super heroes

Super heroes have invaded Clark County as our local libraries plan to lead young readers on imaginative summer journeys.

Enon Public Library, 209 E. Main St., is within walking distance for hundreds of young folks on summer vacation. And it’s just minutes away by bicycle. The newest library branch in the Clark County Public Library system, this place just makes me happy I live in a small town.

It’s convenient, sunny, friendly and air-conditioned with wi-fi. What more can we ask for?

The children’s section is decorated with super-sized flowers, butterflies and bugs that get the imaginations of little one going. And it is going to be a busy place this summer, with a variety of activities planned to encourage reading. Staff member Jane Cross has been preparing the children’s section for the events. A bright display of superhero books sets the mood.

Some events require pre-registration, so be sure to check ahead.

This Wednesday, the Miami Valley Pet Therapy Association will be bringing in certified therapy dogs and cats that love to have someone between the ages of 5 and 12 years old read to them. They will be at the library from 1:30-3 p.m. This is great read-aloud practice for vacationing students and good for lots of furry friend time. The pets will return for more reading fun July 8 from 10:30 a.m.-noon. Young readers are invited to drop in any time during the sessions.

Kindergarten through sixth grade will have Ninja crafts to take home June 11.

Librarian Terri Bowman told me that all the staff is especially looking forward to the next event, Super Hero Training Academy, from 1-2 p.m. June 17. This will be fun. Pre-registration of 4- to 10-year-olds is recommended. I hope they take lots of photos.

The LEGO Club for Kindergarten through sixth grade will create hideouts and action sets for heroes at 10:30 a.m. June 24. Don’t forget to register ahead of time so they have enough LEGOs.

June 26 is movie afternoon for “How to Train Your Dragon 2” at 2 p.m. It will be shown in high definition with audio and visual effects. Kids can bring their own snacks as long as there are no red colored-beverages. Got to take care of that nice carpet, folks.

Registration is required to reserve a spot at the next three popular events.

Amazon John from Silly Safaris returns with his amazing animal friends June 29. Fireman Dave will be at the Library July 9, with a magic show about fire safety and reading. Then July 16, kids can learn how to draw heroically comical characters with Jeff Nicholas. All three of these events start at 11 a.m.

When a parent calls 864-2502, to reserve a spot it would be good to double check the age for the event, too. Remember, young folks must be accompanied at these events by a parent or caregiver.

One of the best things about Enon being a branch of the larger Clark County Public Library system is that some of the events will happen again at a different branch. Often the repeat is at the Village Branch, 1123 Sunset Ave., in Springfield. And other branches have events that are totally different. For example, through June and July, Park Branch, 1119 N. Bechtle Ave., has free Friday Flicks for all ages at 2:30 p.m.

One of the big library events this summer is Comic Con for families with children 12 and younger. This will be at the Main Library at 2 p.m. June 9. Visitors are encouraged to come dressed as a superhero for games, crafts and activities. This event will be huge. Teen Comic Con will be June 11 at 6 p.m. Main Street Comics and Games will have displays at both.

Parents can learn more about the summer reading events at Enon and the additional events at the Main Library and other branches on the web at www.ccpl.lib.oh.us

And there is one more event I must mention.

The Friends of the Library will be holding their annual used book sale this coming weekend — Friday through Sunday. This is at United Senior Services at the Pitzer Center, which is located on the other side of the Heritage Center across the tracks from the Library, 101 South Fountain Ave. The event is for members only Friday. Public sale is on Saturday from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. And the Grab Bag Sale will be Sunday afternoon from 1-4 p.m.

This is one of the events that makes the summer reading programs possible. It is a great way to pick up reasonably priced summer reading material that does not need returning. You can take all the time you want reading on lazy summer afternoons and help support the library summer programs at the same time. Sounds good to me.
