Champaign County show puts the ‘ho-ho-ho’ in holiday humor

Between the last-minute shopping, holiday parties, cooking and dealing with family, by next week, just about everybody could use a laugh.

Sansami Creative Works will put the ho-ho-ho in holiday humor.

The theater group will present its first holiday-themed show Sketchmas, a series of holiday- or winter-themed sketches capturing the lighter side of the season at 4 p.m. Friday, Dec. 29, and 4 and 8 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 30 at The Grove in West Liberty.

The show is family-friendly.

“You see a lot of Christmas movies people love and television shows with holiday episodes, and we wanted to follow that tradition with laughs,” Sansami founder Sawyer Shafer said.

Whereas previous Sansami original sketch productions used two or three writers, Sketchmas involved five, for which Shafer is glad. The sketches reflect real moments from the season from the writers’ different perspectives.

One has to do with the experience of a nativity scene with something out of the ordinary. Another is a Thanksgiving skit with finding a time capsule being dug up showing how things have changed in the past few years and a commentary on the world.

Another shows what happens when something goes wrong for Santa and his elves. Shafer said there’s something for everyone to relate to.

“We have a nice balance, not just about one holiday,” he said.

Nine performers will put on the sketches. Shafer said Sansami’s members are trying to learn all aspects of theater production and he hopes this will continue the creativity through writing.

“We’re trying to bring everybody in because writing is the one thing they are most hesitant about. It’s about encouraging them to explore by instinct,” he said.

The group had originally scheduled Friday’s performance at 8 p.m. and instead chose to move it up to 4 p.m. so as to not conflict with Ohio State’s Cotton Bowl game at 8:30.

There are also discounts available. For Friday’s, if you wear OSU apparel, it will knock $2 off admission and for either Saturday performance, bring two canned goods or non-perishable food items to donate to a local food pantry and take $2 off admission.

Sansami’s The Best and the Bard 2017-2018 season will continue in February with “The Affairs of Men: A Night of Adult Humor.”
