Champaign County Fair kicks off with rides, animals and more

The Champaign County Fair opened Friday for its 175th year, with rides, iconic fair favorites and animal shows.

Allison Harlan, 10, has been showing sheep at the fair for the past two years but comes for more than just the animals.

“I’ve been riding the rides my whole life,” she said.

Allison and her mother, Cindy Harlan, make the fair a family outing and try to see as much as possible.

Sisters Emily and Leah Laudenback also like to explore the fair when they’re not tending to their cows. Leah, 10, has been showing for two years.

“We saw tiny goats in the other barns,” said 15-year-old Emily, who has been showing cattle for six years.

Brad Coy, a 4-H leader of the hog shows, said the fair has advanced in recent years.

“This year, they have new TVs,” he said. “They stream the shows live.”

Cloverbuds, a program for children ages 5 to 8, also received recognition for participants’ hard work.

It was Dylan Daniels’s first year in the Cloverbud program. Earlier in the year he visited Cedar Bog with other Cloverbuds and made a book of leaf rubbings for the event Friday.

“I like doing the activities,” he said.

Connor Hayes plans on joining 4-H next year to be around the animals, and his shadow box project shows how much he likes farm animals. The box is a miniature display of fair activities.

“I like animals, so I bought some to put in my box,” he said.

Larry and Becky Clark visited the fair for the first time Friday and were impressed by the fair workers.

“They have wonderful service,” Becky Clark said. “We were picked up right from our car in a golf cart.”

The couple had passed the fair on the road and decided to drop by to show their two children.

“You can tell that everyone is proud of the fair,” Becky Clark said.
