• The Soroptimist Club of Urbana is accepting applications for the Women’s Opportunity Award, presented annually to women who are their family’s primary financial supporter. The award is meant to recognize women who also have been accepted for vocational training or an undergraduate degree program and have financial need. The Urbana club will offer one $250 award. The winner will advance to the Soroptimist district and regional competition. Applications and reference forms also are available at the Champaign County Library. Applications and two references must be submitted to Kay Schenkel by Dec. 15.

• The C.A.S.T. Community Adult and Student Theatre will host “Death By Dessert,” a murder mystery dinner theater that will be performed at Roberts on Miami in downtown Urbana. The performance is scheduled for Jan. 23 and 24, with snow dates in Feb. 5 and 6. Proceeds will provide funding for a spring musical. For a menu, contact Roberts on Miami at (937) 622-1010. Tickets are $50 per person and also can be purchased at the restaurant.

• The Champaign Health District has scheduled an H1N1 flu clinic from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 19 at the Champaign County Fairgrounds.

Health officials are anticipating approval from the Ohio Health Department to make the vaccine available to everyone. There will be no charge for the vaccine, which will be available in both the shot and nasal mist forms.

Entrance to the fairgrounds will be at the East Powell Avenue gate.

A second dose of the vaccine is needed for children younger than 10 for full protection. At least 28 days should pass between the child’s first and second vaccinationt.

Children who received their initial vaccination on or before Nov. 24 will be eligible for their second dose.

• Mechanicsburg Elementary School students will be singing Christmas carols to raise money for their music program from 7 to 8 p.m. on Dec. 21, elementary school students will walk the town singing for donations. The money raised will go toward new equipment for the music program. Donations will be collected by group leaders, and area residents can make checks payable to Mechanicsburg Schools. “Mechanicsburg Kid Carolers” should be written in the memo line. • Urbana University will hold its 114th commencement ceremony at 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 12, in the Warren G. Grimes Center Gymnasium.

In all, 167 degrees will be conferred, including 36 masters, 92 bachelors and 39 associate degrees. Class of 2009 valedictorians include Melanie Eckert and Allana I.W. McCreight, both of Urbana.

Dr. Lee-Hsing Lu, executive educator in Benedictine and Urbana Universities’ Partnership Graduate programs will serve as the commencement speaker. He is the chairman of Asia Organization Development Network, USA, and president of Asia Enterprise Technology.

• The Soroptimist Club of Urbana will give proceeds from its annual holiday basket raffle to the Champaign County Library. Club members are selling tickets for a chance to win one of two baskets filled with everything from card and board games to gourmet food items and music CDs. The drawing will take place on Dec. 12. The baskets are on display at the Champaign County Library, and residents can also purchase tickets there. Tickets also are available at the Urbana-Champaign County Senior Citizens Center and from Soroptimist Club members. Tickets are $1 each or $5 for six. For more information, call (937) 653-4089.
