Census will create 24,000 temp jobs for Ohioans

Next year’s census will create 24,000 temporary jobs in Ohio, far more than the 5,000 openings the Census Bureau announced earlier, state officials said.

Ohio Treasurer Kevin Boyce said in a statement that Ohioans who need jobs will be given an opportunity to work and also provide an important service for their communities.

Census workers in the Dayton area will start at $14.25 an hour, according to the Census Web site. Springfield-area workers start at $13.25 and Cincinnati-area workers start at $15.50.

The state’s unemployment rate remains near 25-year highs at more than 10 percent.

The jobs include positions for door-to-door field workers who will count residents, and openings for inside clerical employees. Census officials have said the pay ranges from $8.25 to $19 an hour.

The 2010 census will help determine how federal funding and congressional seats are distributed.
