Census workers in the Dayton area will start at $14.25 an hour, according to the Census Web site. Springfield-area workers start at $13.25 and Cincinnati-area workers start at $15.50.
The state’s unemployment rate remains near 25-year highs at more than 10 percent.
The jobs include positions for door-to-door field workers who will count residents, and openings for inside clerical employees. Census officials have said the pay ranges from $8.25 to $19 an hour.
The 2010 census will help determine how federal funding and congressional seats are distributed.
